THE CHRONOLOGICAL CROSBY

This series of discs attempts to gather together in chronological order all of Bing Crosby’s commercial recordings, including alternate takes and rejects. John McNicholas first launched this series on LP and in 1996 began reissuing the collection on compact disc. McNicholas produced 51 CDs that covered Bing's recording career from 1926 through 1950.

Mr. McNicholas retired with the release of Jonzo 51, but the International Club Crosby continued to support the series through 1956 with a commercial distributor, Sepia Records of London. If purchased through the International Club Crosby the price of each Sepia Records disc is $12.50 postage included. In the listing of the contents of the Jonzo discs below, the number in parentheses indicates the number of versions of the song on the disc.

(This listing was originally held on the Bing Crosby Internet Museum which has now been closed down. Steven Lewis, who ran the Museum, kindly released his file to BING magazine so that details of this incredible series of records could still be seen by researchers and updated.)

THE CHRONOLOGICAL BING CROSBY 1933 (Jonzo JZCD-13)
This volume in the Jonzo series is the best yet. Truly, John Davies has mastered the art of restoring 78rpm discs. The quality reveals that this project is a labor of love and technical skill on the part of the producers. Unlike many reissues of Bing's '30s materials where Bing sounds as if he is singing in the next room with the door closed, Davies brings him right into your room. Bing has what I like to call "presence" on all these tracks. I compared one of the selections on this disc, Bing's remarkable 1933 recording of "Home on the Range," to Robert Parker's reissue on "CLASSIC CROSBY 1931-38 IN DIGITAL STEREO." To me, Parker has long been the reigning champion in bringing old recordings to life. I now believe that Davies has caught, if not surpassed, Parker. Parker manages to squeeze a bit more of the background noise out of the old recordings, and simulates stereo where none previously existed. But the cost of Parker's noise reduction and stereo simulation is a slight mechanical sound to Bing's voice. Bing's voice sounds more natural on the "Chronological" disc. This disc includes Bing's recordings between June 9 and Sept. 27, 1933. Learn to Croon (3), Moonstruck, My Love, I've Got to Pass Your House (2), Blue Prelude (2), I Would If I Could But I Can't, Shadow Waltz, I've Got to Sing a Torch Song (2), There's a Cabin in the Pines, Down the Old Ox Road, Thanks, The Day You Came Along, I Guess It Had to be That Way, Black Moonlight (2), Beautiful Girl, The Last Roundup, After Sundown, Home on the Range.
